Lawn Aeration

Lawn Aeration

The drought of 2023 has taken a toll on lawns in the deep South. Our area has been hit particularly hard. Lawn Aeration could be the solution to getting your lawn back to the greenscape we all love. What is Lawn Aeration and what are its benefits?
There are different methods of aerating your lawn, but regardless of which you do, they all do the same basic thing. Aeration punches holes in the ground, or removes small plugs of terrain, which allows air and water to penetrate deep into the soil.

Benefits Includes:

  • Quality grass seed isn’t cheap. Aeration will improve the viability of fresh grass seed to supplement your lawn’s thin grass and bare spots.
  • Improves uptake of fertilization, jumpstarting your lawn’s growth in early spring.
  • It reduces water runoff and puddling by helping absorption into the soil. This is especially beneficial on the hard sandy loam soil type in Carriere, MS, and surrounding areas.
  • Creates stronger, deeper turfgrass roots.
  • Loosens soil compaction of hard ground so grass can take root and thrive.
  • It helps give your lawn that soft cushy feel by creating thicker, lusher Grass.
  • Enhances heat and drought tolerance once the grass is established.
What are the types of lawn aeration? There are 2 primary methods used to aerate lawns.
We at Kut-Rite use what is called ‘Core Aeration’. This method removes small plugs of soil, which are left behind to compost back into the turf. It is the best method for harder, more compact soil types like we have in our local area. It is also the best method to perform prior to seeding bare spots of hard ground.
The second type is Spike Aeration. This can be in the form of a large drum roller with spikes on it, or something as simple as spiked sandals that you walk around your yard with. While this method does help air and water penetrate down to the roots of your lawn, it can cause additional compaction of the soil.
